OUR LONGEVITY ARTICLES OF THE WEEK: March 7th, 2025
Â
A Staggering Increase.
Â
A decade or so ago, I am 62 as of this writing, I went for my yearly physical. The well meaning Doctor gave me the view of my future as it pertained to the medications he predicted that I would be on when I reached my age presently. I understand that his training, insight, and years of clinical work all lead him to the announcement that I would be on medications for blood pressure (typically 2), cholesterol, and then with side effects of those alone, probably one for erectile dysfunction.
"The percentages show you will be on these meds" he frankly told me.
Â
Â
STACK THE DECK IN MY FAVOR
My response was simple and straightforward, "What are we doing to do to make me one of the people who do not need those meds?". Again, I meant no ill will by this direct question, but if someone told you that your car was going to break down by THIS time, or your house was going to fall down by THAT time, wouldn't you ask "How can we make those things NOT happen?'. The silent stare back at me showed that THAT was not in his plan, not in his wheel house for my health and longevity.
Â
19 PRESCRIPTIONS PER YEAR
Reading the latest statistics by the mega insurere Kaiser Permanente, they show that "According to data from IQVIA, around 6.3 billion prescriptions are written in the United States each year, which translates to roughly 19 prescriptions per American annually."Â Â The average American is getting 19 prescriptions per year!Â
Â
Let me be straight, I have ABSOLUTELY no problem with the number of prescriptions that are being written. None. My true concern is two fold: 1. Are we healthier for having fulfilled those prescriptions, or are we just dying slower from them? And 2. How many side effects do medications have?
Â
69.8 times
How many times have you looked at a prescription you have been given, read the front label, the back panel, and then have to peel off a side panel that has ALL of the side effects that THAT med has. The range can be from 0 to 525 (click this link: number of side effects)
while the average was 69.8 Adverse Drug Events (side effects for us regular people).
Â
19 TIMES 69.8
So if I am filling those 19 prescriptions per year, and each one, on the average has 69.8 adverse drug events with it, that means I am taking meds that could cause 1,326.2 adverse drug events to me, and in me.
Â
When I first started looking at these numbers a decade ago, I was appalled to see that the number of presciptions was at 12.8. Now it is nearly 20. Again, I have NOTHING against the precriptions, but the questions that have GOT to be aksed, and then answered are:
Â
SIMPLE QUESTIONS. AND NEEDED ANSWERS.
1. Are WE, you and me, healthier for all of those precriptions?
2. How many of the precriptions are causing more problems down stream that now need a prescription?
3. How much does this all cost?
4. How can we find generic meds that do the same thing?
6. Is there an off-ramp for the meds? Or are they all "on for life" kinds of meds?
7. How can we stack the deck in favor of not needing these meds?
Â
I'll say it because no one else will:Â we, you and me, a nation, we don't get healthier, we never reach the living of longevity with 19 prescriptions.Â
Â
Longevity is YOU doing daily healthy things.

There is no one single bullet to make your longevity a reality. It takes small steps done every day, consistently for years. Yes, it seems daunting, but the benefits are outrageous. - Dr. J.
